Sometimes when you are sharing your Internet connection you need to slow down your Internet connection to avoid running out of your Internet usage quota, usually preset by your Service Provider. Typically, this task is practiced in small office setups, where some users try to use a lot of bandwidth over the network. You can conveniently slow down your Internet connection speed using a special kind of software to put a cap on the bandwidth that you can use.

Using NetLimiter

Step 1

Download and install NetLimiter. See Resources for a link to its website. As of August 2010, NetLimiter Pro version is available for $29.95 while the NetLimter Lite version costs $19.95.

Step 2

Run the program. Click on "Start" menu, go to "All Programs," click on "Net Limiter" and select "Net Limiter."

Step 3

Click the "Limits" button. All the programs that connect to Internet running on your computer will be listed here. You will also see text boxes for speed in front of every program.

Step 4

Type in the maximum Internet speed you wish to allocate to each program in the text box and click the "Limit" check box. This will set the speed limit you have allocated to the particular program. Now click the "OK" button.

Using Traffic Shaper XP

Step 1

Download and install Traffic Shaper XP. See Resources for link to the website.

Step 2

Run the program. Click the "Start" menu and go to "All Programs." Click on "Traffic Shaper XP" and select "Traffic Shaper XP Client."

Step 3

Click on "File" in the main menu and select "New Rule."

Step 4

Select the type of Internet you're using from the "Network Adapter" drop-down list and select the direction on which you want to limit the bandwidth from the "Direction" drop-down list. The direction can be download, upload or both. Now click the "Next" button.

Step 5

Type a name for the rule in the "Rule Name" text box and select a bandwidth limit from the "Limit Speed to" drop-down list. Leave the rest of settings unchanged, and click the "Next" button twice to complete the rule configuration. Click the "Finish" button to add the rule to the list of rules.

Using CC Proxy

Step 1

Download and install CC Proxy software. See Resources for link to the website.

Step 2

Run the program. Click the "Start" menu and go to "All Programs." Click on "CC Proxy" and select "CC Proxy."

Step 3

Click the "Account" button in the toolbar and click the "New" button in the "Account Manager."

Step 4

Type your computer's IP address in the "IP Address/IP Range" text box. Type in the bandwidth you want to allocate in the "Bandwidth" text box and select the applications you want to enforce the bandwidth limit on by clicking them.

Step 5

Click the "Save" button. An entry will be added to the "Account Manager" for your computer's bandwidth limit.
